"The Madness of TV is the Madness of Human life" Camille Paglia

Interpretation of the quote

Our quote from Camile Paglia seemed like quite a realistic interactive project to create as many concepts surrounding madness, TV and human life are very relatable and current topics. I think that the quote itself can be interpreted in two ways as to whether it would be an agreeable quote or to contrast and contradict itself and people wouldn't agree with it. Also many different people may have a different perception of what 'Madness' is as they may be from various upbringings, cultures and countries, and their experience with TV and what they have seen due to regulations of TV companies ay differ.

HyperNormalisation: Adam Curtis BBC documentary to look at why the world is so hopelessly f*cked

HyperNormalisation: Adam Curtis BBC documentary to look at why the world is so hopelessly f*cked

Adam Curtis' work explores the areas of sociology, psychology, philosophy and political history, he describes his work as journalism that happens to be expounded via the medium of film."How we got to this strange time of great uncertainty and confusion where those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed and have no idea what to do".We have taken inspiration from Curtis' work as we have found that our idea of layering really mad clips from previous years can look effective and prove the point like in his work.

'We live in a strange time …'

Our idea for our interaction

We decided that we wanted to capture and find other people in the public's own maddest event that they have seen on TV, to get a range of interpretations of the word mad. We decided to tape the audio of their stories instead of on camera as we though that the camera would make us unapproachable and not want to have any participation. We felt that the audio would capture the raw emotion and enthusiasm in their voices. Also for the visuals we want to create the maddest and craziest historical events that have occurred to influence and relate to the viewer.

Key experience and findings

From after audio interviewing a range of different people and hearing their experiences with the madest and craziest scene on TV, a few had similar features as they were factual and news related, such as 9/11. For the visuals we decided on creating a montage and election of mad or crazy TV events from a range of time periods, specfically historical factual events just to prove the realness and truth of the quote we were given. We noticed that some people said the maddest events in such a casual manner as though they accustomed to them, and some people felt that they had seen the maddest things that could exist in their eyes but we are oblivious to the extreme events going on in the world.

Final Outcome- Interaction

Preliminary Research

Tate Modern

Nil Yalter

Nil Yalter, Temporary Dwellings

"Temporary Dwellings consists of archival panels where Yalter has recorded the details of the lives of immigrants in Istanbul, Paris and New York. Using mixed media she merges a sociological approach with a poetic and critical gaze." (tate.org.uk)

Yalter's work communicated her findings through the use of a range of recordings in combination with first hand research into the issues of immigrants lives. I think that her work at the Tate presents the key idea of communication as she has formatted her work into various formats and findings, as she has investigated peoples everyday life and linked them all within her work.

Sheela Gowda

Sheila Gowda, Behold

"Large scale installation ‘behold’ consists of two contrasting materials steel car bumpers and knotted human hair. Her work rotted in her experience of daily life inn Bengaluru as observing the coexistence of tradition alongside modern urban and economic transformation." (tate.org.uk)

I found Gowda's work really unusual as her word was displayed in a room to itself so the installation took over the empty space as it was on the walls. I think that the combination of two unlikely materials to be used in art/design work or just in everyday in general really connected well as even though the piece wasn't interactive with the public it was an odd interaction between the materials.

Louise Bourgeois

Louise Bourgeois, 16 etchings on paper

‘"The title of this large scale, multi part drawing translates as into infinity. Each sheet contains the images of ribbons that weave around each other and flow diagonally across the page, suggestive drawings remind us of the basic elements of life and its complex journey through time." (tate.org.uk)

I found that Bourgeois work definitely displays an example of graphic integration on an everyday basis as she has given her drawings an opening meaning to interpret them as vague as they appear, as i think that drawing is one of the main basis to start or produce communication.

Gustav Metzger

Liquid Crystal Environment 1965, remade 2005

"Liquid Crystal Environment is made using heat-sensitive liquid crystals that are placed between glass slides and inserted into projectors. The patterns produced within the various slides are then simultaneously projected onto screens around the exhibiting space, all under the control of a computer program."

This room in the Tate allowed viewers to interact with the displays as they were projected onto white screens therefore created shadows when the light was blocked, I think that graphic installations/designs do not have to always have to be informative with text but can be completely visual as Metzler has created patterns and colours.

Boris Mikhailov

Boris Mikhail, Red

"Red is a symbol of the Soviet, having united the pictures by the colour red, I made a series about ‘the soviet’ as ‘red’ in Russia is beauty, blood and the red flag, everyone’s associations with the colour red with communism." (tate.org.uk)

I think that Mikhailov has highlighted as created an interesting key point within communication of photography as he has used the common theme between his photos of the colour red, as it appears in majority of his work, he wanted to make awareness that the colour red isn't just a symbol of communism but many other things, as associations with colour have political annotations and issues.

Guerrilla Girls

Guerrilla Girls and Andy Warhol

"Andy Warhol and the guerrilla girls, international artists have responded in different ways to imoact of mass media ans communications. The rooms in the display include a diverse range of technique and materials, from posters and paint to digital technology. They share an interest in the visual language and strategies." (tate.org.uk)

I definitely think that this collaboration between Warhol and the anonymous art group displays a wide range of graphic interaction as they have used the combination of mixed media such as type, illustration and photography to pose informative questions and facts that allow the viewer to be involved in the artwork.

Science Museum

Infinite Mix, The Strand

The Infinite Mix: Contemporary Sound and Image brings together audiovisual artworks that are soulful and audacious in their exploration of a wide range of subjects. In all of the works in this exhibition the interplay between moving image and sound is crucial. Most of the artists have composed, commissioned or remixed soundtracks that relate to the visual element of their work in unexpected ways, and ensure that what you hear is just as important as what you see.

Measuring the Universe -Roman Ondak's

I think that this video installation by Ugo Rondinone’s with performance by John Giorno "THANX 4 NOTHING" was one of the installations that really stood out to me due to the emphasis on speech and power of the four main screens surrounding the room and the many smaller tv's along the floor. "Giorno looks back at his life, with humour and compassion. Giorno gives thanks to ‘everyone for everything,’ before speaking frankly on the death of friends and lovers, sex, betrayal and his frequent periods of depression." I think that it really impacted me due to the feeling as if there was a really tense interaction due to the way he was talking, the speed and the loudness of his experienced voice. "Features long shots, intimate close ups and passages of high-speed editing – keeps pace with Giorno’s theatrical delivery and draws attention to the poem’s many rhetorical twists and turns."

In Alexandra McQueen's 1999 spring show was an interactive performance piece between the model and robots that stay painted her plain white dress as she was spun around on a turntable. The model Shalom Harlow is a trained ballerina so she acted and performed in a way that she was oblivious to the robot arms facing her as she acted very surprised and almost disturbed while the paint directed at her.

"My relationship with them shifted at that moment because I started to lose control over my own experience, and they were taking over. So they began to spray and paint and create this futuristic design on this very simple dress." ( blog.metmuseum.org)

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has created an interactive exhibition that ranges from eight to thirteen interactive pieces hat underline the performative character of the public as an integral part of the artwork. I think its so interesting that it records the publics information about them in minor ways as it depends on participation from the public from sounds, awareness and memories.

"Rows of motorised measuring tapes record the amount of time that visitors stay in the installation. As a computerised tracking system detects the presence of a person, the closest measuring tape starts to project upwards. When the tape reaches around 3 meters high it crashes and recoils back." { Design } Signage, Way Finding, Environmental

I felt that the Science museum was an obvious exhibition to visit for this project as interaction is one of the key element of learning within this environment. We came across many different areas that a used interaction as a key part to show and display the information, such as through touchscreen tablets that let you create your own profile based on what brands you like and dislike. Also stands with headphones that allowed you to listen to the information given.
