Paper

As a group we were assigned the material of paper in which we had to discuss its features, characteristics, uses and properties as it is used in everyday life and to think about what else we can associate with it, due to its wide variety of uses.  We came up with a simple but informative brainstorm to visually display our initial thought on the word and what its uses, forms can be and also its associations.

Primary

By using only primary resources we started off by exploring CSM, as paper is one of the main resources to record, experiment and explore with here as its diversity in forms that it comes in its variety can benefit its different purposes. From looking around the main areas of open spaces within the corridors and stairwells. It became obvious that paper is one of the main materials that we can communicate and ‘send out the word’ whether that be reminders, brightly coloured sticky notes, or posters promoting various events or artworks. The CSM art supply shop was an obvious place to explore due to its diversity and wide range of paper to coloured card or tissue paper, or different forms of sketchbooks and notepads.

Even from simply creating tension on a long strip of paper with a pair of scissors, which is used on the decorative ribbon on presents, has created a simple structure with is holding the paper in this position due to the fibers.

Papermaking has traditionally been traced to China when Cai Lun Paper, created a sheet of paper using mulberry and other bast fibres along with fishnets, old rags, and hemp waste. It is a thin material produced by pressing together moist fibres of cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, and drying them into flexible sheets. Due to its many appearances it is heavily processed, treated and coloured, which can have negative associations with the environment, therefore sustainability is a key topic in which would be interesting to explore, as how have artists and textiles artists reused and worked with paper?

Manipulating paper

After looking and exploring paper in it's original bought state we began to think of ways how paper is is used and what simple ways we can create things from it and portray it just from simply folding and tearing. As paper is so mouldable and pliable to bend and twist we remember its uses from when we were younger for entertainment and consequently we created simple structures such as paper planes and oragami. Even this use of hand hand held paper fans that have been used for years, include the decorative and intricate patterns from different cultures have been portrayed through designs. This made us think about how widely used paper and its other strengths such as card and cardboard is used in a variety of different ways.

As continued primary research I have experimented with coloured magazine paper that I have ripped out of various issues, as I have discovered that different companies a wide range of finishes and thickness' that can be used as an advantage to portray work. From simply ripping up and tearing paper in different directions and shapes it has created an almost sea of coloured paper from the range of individual pieces of paper. also close up around the edges of paper you can see the paper fibers that have been torn, this has created texture, as the wide exposed areas could be portrayed in different ways if manipulated with or moved. In addition, I have manipulated the colour finish and patterns on the other paper with a chemical substance called, Citrol, as the colour has worn away at the edges where it has been folded and scored.

Meadham Kirchoff are a designer brand they create and designed for many famous brands such as Vogue and Topshop, their fashion has varied and the meanings behind each collection in unique and independent. their runways for Vogue changed every year, as some of the concepts included the inspiration from location or emotions such as cold vanity. Their work pushed away from reality, to create 'new worlds' as their clothes were made to be seen and worn and not hidden away in a wardrobe, due to the craziness and sense of chaos.

Material- Paper

We researched and found many various books in the library that used or involved paper as the primary source of interest from making oragami, making ornaments, more conceptual work and work that has been constructed into physical builds of architecture. Paper can be expressed and manipulated into representations of numerous types of feelings aswell as the obvious shapes and forms that it can create.

Process Print

The history of printing goes back to the duplication of images by means of stamps in very early times. The use of round seals for rolling an impression into clay tablets goes back to early Mesopotamian civilization before 3000 BCE, where they are the most common works of art to survive, and feature complex and beautiful images. In both China and Egypt, the use of small stamps for seals preceded the use of larger blocks. In China, India and Europe, the printing of cloth certainly preceded the printing of paper or papyrus,

Combining the material, process and practitioner was interesting to see what ideas I find primarily and secondarily, as the internet has a vast range of artists and designers that i have access to.

The Art of Oragami by Samuel Ranlett

Paper can be used and manipulated in many various ways as shown, of decorative purposes of ornaments, bowls, large and small scale sculptures and origami to create detailed features. I think that as it is such a vital material used in our everyday lives, as many people are reliant on it as a main form of communication and expression.

Print is defined as 'to produce (text, picture) by applying inked types, plates, blocks, to paper or other material by direct pressure or indirectly by offsetting an image onto a intermediate rollers.' Print is found everywhere as it is the main form of written communication, I think this can be approached in various ways as when combined with paper as they are associated with one another,  they are easy to manipulate and work with due to their mouldable and flexible state. Justine Khamara

Justine Khamara creates 2D and 3D sculptures from photographs by shredding, layering, bending or folding to create confusion and a sense of disorder. this technique really appeals to me as my three words relate to think, as photographs combine paper and print and the design creates out of reality and chaotic work.

Saving Archives

The underground-iconic London label Meadham Kirchhoff was forced to shut down last year, it had grown a cult following throughout the industry and become one of the most anticipated shows on the London Fashion Week schedule.Having lost control of their archive in the closing of the label, and with much of it already sold off, Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff are now asking the industry and fashion fans to help them save a vital selection of 40 - 55 pieces to create a small but important archive of London fashion history. "the aim is also to make these clothes live -- that they can be borrowed for shoots, that they can be exhibited and not live in the past and be forgotten"
